Berberine 250 with Milk Thistle combines 250mg of Berberine HCl (from Berberis aristata) with 50mg of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) per capsule. Milk thistle is included specifically because it may help inhibit a transporter (P-glycoprotein) that otherwise limits how much berberine the body absorbs, potentially improving berberine's bioavailability.

This is a food supplement, not a medicine. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent diabetes, high cholesterol, or any other medical condition, and it should not be used as a substitute for medication prescribed by your doctor.

Please read the safety information below before starting, particularly if you take medication for diabetes, cholesterol, or blood clotting, or take any regular prescription medication.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know before you order.

Why is milk thistle included alongside berberine?

Berberine on its own is poorly absorbed by the body. Milk thistle may help inhibit a transporter (P-glycoprotein) that limits berberine absorption, which is why the two are combined in this formula rather than milk thistle being included for its own separate effect.

Is there real evidence this combination works, or is it just theory?

There's genuine trial evidence. A 2019 meta-analysis of 5 randomised, placebo-controlled trials (497 participants) found significant improvements in cholesterol markers and fasting blood glucose with a berberine-silymarin combination. That said, those trials used a specific different branded product with the same combination approach, not this exact formulation, so we'd describe this as evidence for the approach rather than a guarantee for this specific product.

How do I take it?

1 to 2 capsules, once or twice daily, ideally 30 minutes before food, or as directed by your healthcare practitioner.

I'm on medication. Is this safe to take alongside it?

Please check with your GP or pharmacist first, especially if you're on diabetes medication, statins, blood thinners, or immunosuppressants. Berberine has well-documented interactions with these medication types (see safety information below). Milk thistle's interaction profile is less clear-cut. Some studies suggest a mild effect on certain drug-metabolising enzymes and transporters, while others show no meaningful effect at typical doses, so we'd still recommend caution and a conversation with your pharmacist if you're on regular medication.

Can this replace my diabetes or cholesterol medication?

No. This is a food supplement, not a medicine, and it's not intended to treat diabetes, high cholesterol, or any other diagnosed condition. Please don't stop or adjust any prescribed medication without speaking to your doctor first.

Is this suitable for everyone?

It's not suitable for pregnant or breastfeeding women. As with any supplement with real pharmacological activity, we'd recommend discussing it with a practitioner first, particularly if you have an existing health condition or take regular medication.

Why does Insight recommend blood testing before starting supplements like this?

Because berberine can meaningfully affect blood sugar and cholesterol markers, we think it's genuinely useful to know your starting point and monitor change over time, rather than taking it without any baseline information.
