The honest answer is it's two numbers most shoppers never check. Clean Air Delivery Rate (CADR) tells you how much filtered air a unit actually produces, in cubic metres per hour, and it should be matched to your room size rather than assumed. Air Changes per Hour (ACH) tells you how many times the unit can filter your specific room's volume of air in an hour. A small, quiet unit in a room too big for it will do very little, no matter how well reviewed it is.

The filter matters just as much as the fan. True HEPA, tested to the EN 1822 standard and rated H13 or above, captures 99.95% of particles down to 0.1 microns, which covers dust, pollen and pet dander.
